Parking Fee & $1.99 lesson learnt

  I heard from my brother that NTU is going to charge us money per minute basis for parking in NTU.. At all the carparks even those at hall.. Why ??? Dr Su Guanyin, your salary not enough issit ??? haha.. This morning I read on the strait times regarding NTU having Peeping Tom in hall.. Somemore a Club President.. Wa Lao.. High can go Geylang leh or use the internet.. What for risk it in school ??? Now kanna condemn.. Obby Good.. Why NTU always come out all the negative news on the papers.. Today Strait Times also state that NUS is combining with Harvard for some student programmes.. Why NUS always got the positive image ?? NTU student protesting, NTU student Peeping, NTU Hall fee rise, NTU blah blah blah !!! Maybe there will be a 2nd Tammy case coming from NTU..haha.. I waiting for that to happen..since we got so many Hostels in NTU..sure got some boh liao ppl will find it interesting to tape themselves having sex..

  Oh ya.. I want to tell you all about the article written by Nanz Chong, the one that started $1.99 shop & went bankrupt.. A good advice from her husband: Never Hire Someone You can’t Fire." Coming from a Asian background, we have a servere loyalty syndrome. One is expected to stick up for family or fellow "Clan" members, no matter what. So when come into firing someone considered "Family", I will suffer terrible Guilt because I feel like breaking someone’s Rice Bowl. Its an acquired art to hire & fire a person. Not hiring the right person causes a lot of emotional stress & financial drainage– not firing the wrong person causes even more.

  It was not in my nature of doing spot check on my staff, trusted them with their time management, end up the employee abuse the system. Finally have no choice but pick up my courage to fire them. Practise make perfect: I soon began a system of reviewing staff performance & setting up policies & guidelines on how to fire staffs. Another type of worker are those that do not delegate their jobs & had a problem doing the work she was qualified & paid for. They have an "Old School" system which employee have to clock in on time & focus on their dress attire rather than thier work performance.

  I had some family members come to work for me. They made some great contributions to the business. However, because they were family, they did not share the same sense of propriety that my employees display. For example one would continually miss important meetings, & its become awkward when my staff began to think standards could be compromise. Then another family member who worked in the warehouse thought it was acceptable to snack on the merchandise.

  I could not bring myself to firing them! I worried about not being able to face them at the future family reunions. How could I be so cruel to my own family?

  Hiring friends is another minefield. If you value the friendship, be doubly careful about hiring or doing business with him or her. The business relationship should benefit both of you, not just one. There has to be team effort, one shared direction, an ease while working together, a mutual trust, the freedom to be open & honest with each other without harbouring hurt. If there is any fear of losing this friend, hold back! If you are losing sleep worrying if the business relationship will soil your friendship, then don’t do it. Once relationship is focus on fear, It will not work.
